Commercial TV began in the UK 70 years ago, and because valve TV sets took five to ten minutes to heat up and settle, a tuning caption and music were shown for five minutes before each block of programmes. Each regional company had its own overture – many specially commissioned and all played hundreds of times to imprint them on young memories! But only a very few were released commercially.
Now PYE Records have released an LP record featuring the original opening music for all 15 of the original Independent Television companies, which made their debut between 1955 and 1962. Drawn from a variety of sources, some recordings will sound dated and below modern technical standards, but we’ve ensured that the very best copies available were used for the record. And two of them turn out to be in stereo!
